Garmin Forerunner 980: release date and rumors

We found no Garmin announcement or verified device-specific leak for a Forerunner 980 in the sources checked on October 5, 2026. The name is a working label for a possible Forerunner 970 successor; the release window below is our historical-cadence estimate.

Predicted release window

May–Jul 2027

Our estimate uses 5 releases and a rounded average gap of 25 months, added to Forerunner 970’s 15 May 2025 release, with a ±1 month range. This is a cadence estimate, not a leaked date.

This estimate follows the flagship 935 → 945 → 955 → 965 → 970 lineage. It excludes the 945 LTE refresh and entry-level watches. The unusually short 955-to-965 gap makes a simple average a rough guide.

Past gaps: 25, 38, 9, 26 months. Small sample; naming and product strategy can change.

What the name tells us

980 follows the numbering of the 970, but Garmin has not confirmed it. A 975, a 970 Pro or another name remains possible. Those alternatives also lack an official announcement in the sources checked.

Rumors and evidence

975 or 970 Pro could be a different kind of update

the5krunner lists a possible Forerunner 975 LTE and discusses a smaller Pro model. Its table gives May 2026, a date that has already passed.

This is roadmap speculation, not a named certification or a launch announcement. It does not establish a 980 release date.

LTE, new displays, health features, routing and charging

Garmin News proposes early 2027 and hopes for LTE, solar AMOLED or MicroLED, broader ECG and temperature support, smarter routing and inductive charging.

The author presents these as wishes, with no device-specific evidence. The article also calls the 975 released; we found no official announcement supporting that claim.

A connected Forerunner before a full successor?

Android Central argues that an LTE or satellite-equipped 970 spinoff could arrive before a full-generation replacement. It considers a 980 unlikely in 2026.

This is the writer’s forecast from Garmin’s product strategy. It supplies no 980 hardware ID, retail listing or confirmed feature set.

Buy Forerunner 970 or wait?

If you need maps and training tools now, assess the 970 on its published features. Waiting makes sense if your current watch still works and you can accept an uncertain date. There is no verified 980 feature list to justify an upgrade decision yet.
