Garmin Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED During 5 Days Backpacking in Scotland

Tony Hobbs Wild About Watches and Tony Hobbs ·

I took the Garmin fēnix 9 Pro AMOLED to Scotland for a five-day backpacking trip with my outdoor friend Chris Townsend along Glen Feshie, up the Lairig Ghru in the Cairngorms. How would it cope with real-world GPS navigation, satellite messaging and battery life in the Scottish mountains? In this field test, I look at the features that matter when you're backpacking away from mobile phone coverage. I show the navigation screens, TalkyToaster mapping, battery-saving settings and satellite messages, and explain what I learned from using the watch over several days. I also look at a few practical frustrations: estimating arrival times when you're slightly off your plotted route, checking for incoming messages, and planning a course when you're out in the hills without a phone signal. Garmin fēnix 9 Pro AMOLED GPS navigation on a Scottish backpacking trip Course guidance, compass bearing, distance and elevation Sending and receiving satellite messages TalkyToaster mapping and map generation Battery saver, LTE and changing battery estimates Checking incoming messages when there's no mobile coverage Planning a route when you're already out in the hills Battery remaining after several days of use My thoughts on the 51 mm watch size and comfort Garmin weather information I used GPS over several days and kept the watch in power-saving mode for much of the trip. Near the end of the fourth day, the battery reading was 21%, with the watch estimating around eight hours remaining. The results show why settings and the use of communication features matter when planning a multi-day trip. By the time I got to the car the fifth morning I was down to 1 day left and 5%. It went into battery saving mode at that point where even Gesture switches off. Have you used the Garmin fēnix 9 Pro? How do you manage battery life on a long walk, and have you found a straightforward way to check for incoming messages without sending a new one? Please share your experience in the comments.
