When your road tripping adventures will take you well off the beaten path, having a way to call for help and stay in touch with loved ones is essential. And as far-flung journeys go, a drive to the Arctic Ocean certainly fits the bill. Last summer, my daughter and I drove the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories , an extremely remote 900-kilometre gravel road that is Canada’s only route from the mainland to north of the Arctic Circle. With zero mobile signal, no medical or emergency services, and villages spread hundreds of kilometres apart, the potential for things go wrong is enormous.
